Review of Pap Smear Awareness Week 2007

The Pap Smear Awareness Week 2007 campaign included the successful media communications campaign ‘Don’t Just Sit There’ on television, radio and in newspapers across the state.

Increased numbers of women had Pap smears during the May 2007 campaign compared to previous years and a number of these women had been well overdue for their Pap smears.

In addition to a whole of community awareness campaign, considerable work involved promoting and encouraging women from low screening groups to participate in the cervical screening program.  Advertising in local newspapers, posters in hotel and major shopping centre rest rooms and activities organised by community hospitals, health centres, libraries, community and neighbourhood centres and general practices contributed to a very successful 2007 campaign.

SA Cervix Screening Program appreciated all the organisations involved in the record number of local events and activities across the state promoting the importance of Pap smears in preventing cervical cancer.  This included a number of medical centre displays and activities supporting women to access screening services.

The non English speaking background communities organised radio interviews and community activities in various languages to increase awareness of women’s preventative health care and featured information and health services offering Pap smears.

Events and activities in rural and metro communities, funded in 2007 by SA Cervix Screening Program, Department of Health.
