Where to get a Pap smear

Pap smears every two years are an important part of a woman’s overall health care. A Pap smear can be done by your local doctor. Some doctor’s clinics have nurses who are specially trained to take Pap smears.

You can have a Pap smear at:

  • Your doctor’s clinic

  • Some women’s health centres

  • Some community health centres

  • Some Aboriginal health services

  • Migrant Health Services

  • SHine SA clinics

Ask your local health service if they have a Pap smear clinic, or visit the websites listed on this page.

How much does a Pap smear cost?

When you make an appointment for a Pap smear, ask your health service provider if there is any direct cost to you.
Two fees are involved – the doctor’s consultation fee and the Pap smear test. Some doctors, clinics and health centres ‘bulk bill’ with no out of pocket expenses for the woman. In some cases you may expect to pay a gap fee or the full cost for the consultation and pathology fee and then claim the rebate from Medicare.

The following is a list of websites to assist you in locating health services for a Pap smear.
