Food Safety Training

The owners of food businesses are responsible for ensuring that staff who handle food or who supervise this work have the skills and knowledge they need to handle food safely.

Formal training is not required and businesses can choose the approach that best suits their needs. However, should businesses wish to organise formal training there are many food safety and hygiene courses available at varying costs. Some are offered during the evening.

To see what training courses are available in your area, check the Yellow Pages under 'Training'. For further advice on courses that may be available, you could also:

  • contact a teaching institution in your area such as TAFE SA

  • contact an industry association;

  • contact your local council. (some local councils may also provide training sessions or resources. To identify the Local Government Authority (Council) responsible for a particular suburb or town in South Australia, use our COUNCIL FINDER database); or

  • conduct a website search on the National Training Information Services website (www.ntis.gov.au) which contains a database of registered training organisations and courses available in Australia

The Department of Health has training resources available. For more information contact the Food Policy & Programs Branch.

For more information regarding the requirement of the Food Safety Standard 3.2.2 Food Safety Practices and General Requirements - food handling Skills and Knowledge. Please refer to the FSANZ information booklet.
