Applied Environmental Health ~ Environmental Services

Environmental Services provides a range of scientific and technical services related to public and environmental health with surveillance, investigation and enforcement activities related to key areas of legislative responsibility (mainly relating to the Public and Environmental Health Act and Regulations).

The Section undertakes a wide range of public and environmental health activities in its role to promote a safe and healthy living environment in South Australia, working with local government and industry and providing public information.

Key activities

• development and maintenance of a legislative framework to deal with environmental health and hygiene
• surveillance, investigation and enforcement activities related to public and environmental health, hygiene and disease outbreaks
• advice and support to other sections of the Department, the Public and Environmental Health Council, the Minister for Health, State and Local Government agencies
• support for local government on the administration of the Public and Environmental Act and Regulations
• producing codes of practice, guidelines, health promotional publications, brochures and fact sheets on public and environmental health issues
• advice on legislation dealing with the disposal of human remains
• specialist advice on public health issues relating to drinking water; marine and freshwaters, groundwater and rainwater, manufactured water systems, consumption of fish and shellfish, microalgal and cyanobacterial blooms, vermin and nuisance insects.
