Nutrition
Good
nutrition is fundamental to achieving good health throughout our lives.
The food we eat as children affects how we grow and what we eat in
childhood can help prevent diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart
disease when we are older.

Start Right Eat Right
Child care centres have been acknowledged as
leading the way in encouraging children to develop healthy
eating habits. The Start Right Eat Right Award Scheme is a SA
Health healthy eating initiative. It requires child care centre
staff - a director and cook - to be trained in menu planning,
childhood nutrition and food hygiene. Awarded Start Right Eat
Right (SRER) centres provide a menu which meets 50% of a child’s
recommended dietary intake. SRER team members are available to
offer ongoing nutritional advice and support for all awarded
centres.

Drink Choices for Staff and Visitors in SA Health Facilities Policy
As part of the South Australian Government’s commitment to
preventing overweight and obesity, a policy has been released to
ensure healthy food is available for staff and visitors in all South

The policy is mandatory and applies to all situations where food and
drinks are provided including cafeterias, kiosks, cafes, shops,
vending machines, catering for functions, meetings and client
education programs as well as fundraising, advertising and
sponsorship. Implementation and associated contractual requirements
commenced as of 1 April 2009. Changes required were phased in over
an 18 month implementation period with compliance required by 1
October 2010. Policy details and resources are now available:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Guide to Healthy Eating
Ensuring that a good range of healthy food is available in
stores in remote Aboriginal communities is fundamental to the good
health of people living in these communities. Resources are now
available to help stores provide, promote and monitor the sales of
healthy food. These resources include a freight improvement toolkit,
checklists for food to be stocked in stores and provided in
takeaways and a monitoring tool that uses scanned sales data to
assess a community’s consumption of key foods and nutrients.
These resources were produced by the Remote Indigenous Stores and
Takeaways project, that was jointly funded 2005-2008 by the
Australian government and governments of Western Australia, Northern
Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.
