Product approval for Waste Control / Wastewater Systems

All products pre-manufactured for sale and use in waste control / wastewater systems installed in South Australia are subject to approval by the relevant authority. This includes pre-manufactured septic tanks and aerobic units of various materials or design, other all-waste wastewater systems, greywater systems, composting toilets, other blackwater / toilet waste systems and yellow water (urine) separation / treatment systems.

For systems larger than a 50 EP (Equivalent Population) the Wastewater Management Section of the Department will need to assess for approval the installation design for each property as well as the design and manufacture of the product.

Approval

Products for use in waste control system installations in South Australia must be approved by the relevant authority (authorised officers of the Department of Health with the delegated authority from the Minister of Health).

An application for approval to manufacture and sell a wastewater system must be submitted to the Department's Wastewater Management Section. An application fee applies. Department officers can advise on the current fee and are available to discuss your application.

Codes and Standards

If a standard onsite wastewater / waste control system product is to be manufactured, the following standards are applicable:

Australian Standards are applicable in the design and manufacture of some wastewater system products. The standards can be obtained from Standards Australia at 63 Greenhill Road, Wayville SA 503. Telephone: 1300 65 46 46.
