What are South Australian Perinatal Practice Guidelines?

The South Australian Perinatal Practice Guidelines (SAPPG) are clinical guidelines. They are based on systematic research and identification of the best available evidence. They have been developed in cooperation with the major metropolitan public hospitals, and will supersede previously used obstetric guidelines. Their development for use throughout South Australia has been approved by the South Australian Department of Health (DH).

These guidelines outline the principles for:

1. Managing pregnancy- and newborn-related conditions
and / or
2. Performing a procedure related to pregnancy and / or the newborn.

The SAPPG are designed as a guide for the following clinicians:

  • Obstetricians
  • General Practitioners
  • Trainee Medical Officers
  • Registered Midwives
  • Pharmacists
  •

The SAPPG govern only those aspects of pregnancy care that require medical authorisation. They provide clinicians state-wide access to a uniform process of clinical assessment, decision making and practice. Clinicians should use these guidelines within the context of offering individualised care for pregnant women and their babies.
